Deck & Porch Staining

Wood that looks cared for again

Decks here take a beating. Pollen and leaves in spring, hard sun all summer, wet leaves in fall and ice in winter. Once the finish wears through, the wood turns gray, checks and starts soaking up water.

We clean the wood, let it dry and apply a finish that suits the boards: a clear or semi-transparent stain that keeps the grain showing, or a solid color for older wood. Screened porch floors, steps, railings and fences get the same care.

The process

How we stain a deck

  1. 01

    Inspect

We check for gray wood, mildew, loose boards and old finish, and give you a free estimate.

  2. 02

    Clean

The deck is washed and left to dry fully, since stain will not soak into damp wood.

  3. 03

    Prep

Rough spots are sanded and nearby siding, plants and furniture are covered.

  4. 04

    Stain

Boards, rails and steps are finished in the color and opacity you picked.

Questions

Deck & porch staining questions

Stain or paint for a deck?

Penetrating stain soaks into the wood and wears away slowly, which makes the next coat easier. Paint and solid stain hide more but can peel on flat boards that hold water. The age and condition of your deck decide which one makes sense.

How often does a deck need new stain?

It depends on sun, shade and the product. A good sign it is time: water soaks in and darkens the wood instead of beading on top.

Do you stain fences and porch floors too?

Yes. Fences, railings and porch floors can be done along with the deck or on their own.
